She said although staff suspected Big Ear’s 5cm-deep wound in the abdomen was caused by a shot from an object, no objects had yet been discovered inside the dog’s body.

Among the first to arrive at the scene to rescue the mongrel at Wong Tai Sin yesterday was Alvin Yu Chun-yu, a 29-year-old volunteer coordinator of the clinic.

“The situation was very urgent when I arrived,” he said. “Big Ear was very weak and he was losing a lot of blood.

“We later learned from another local resident who said she saw a man shot Big Ear with a bamboo-like object in the early hours yesterday,” Yu added. “We think the object fell away from Big Ear while he was escaping.”

“You don’t need to love dogs, but don’t hurt them. They also have a right to live.”

A police spokesman said it was investigating the case. The clinic said it would soon start an online campaign to raise funds for Big Ear’s surgeries.
